Mission Statement:

The purpose of SLBC's Sunday School/Junior Church is to help students come to know, love and follow Jesus.

To know:  In each of the classes, students learn age appropriate Bible stories and the basic teachings of the Christian faith. They will also grow in their skill and use of faith skills, such as Bible study, prayer and worship.

To love:  Each lesson encourages students to apply Bible learning to their current life situations. The goal of Bible teaching is to help God's children understand the world through their Father's perspective and live the joyful life God intended by adopting His values.

To follow:  Students also grow in their understanding about what it means to be a Christian, a follower of Jesus. Using the gifts He has given them, they will learn that faith is an active, every day part of life; that loving God and loving your neighbor is not just reserved for Sunday, but every moment of their lives.

Schedule:

Sunday School classes meet on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m., beginning with a 15 minute song service. Classes then continue in their designated rooms until 10:45 a.m.

  • Family Connected - Take home materials encourage faith-building that involves the whole family.

Things You Need to Know:

The following is helpful information to get the most out of the Sunday School experience:

Age for Attendance - Children need to be out of diapers and three years of age by September 1st to attend preschool Sunday School.

Children’s Worship through Music - Children’s Sunday School opening begins at 9:45 sharp. This is a brief time for the whole Children’s Sunday School to gather to sing, pray, celebrate birthdays, learn about the current mission projects and collect offerings.

Facilities - We need to be respectful of supplies and space, therefore, no children should be in classrooms unless a teacher or parent-assistant is present. Also, due to safety considerations, we encourage students to walk, not run, in the hallways and through the church foyer.

Discipline - For the most part our Sunday School students are extremely cooperative and respectful of their teachers and classmates. On the rare occasions when a student's behavior becomes inappropriate, we follow these steps:

  • The teacher will address the student's behavior and help him or her redirect to more acceptable actions.
  • If redirection is not effective, the student will be given a brief time to relax and reflect outside the classroom under supervision. When the teacher and student agree that the child is ready, he or she will return to class.
  • If the first two steps are not effective, the student will be escorted to the parent, or remain outside the classroom until the parent comes to pick him or her up.

Expectation of Teachers - In order to be faithful to the trust placed in them by God, SLBC parents, and students, we expect our teachers to strive for the following:

  • To be regular in worship attendance.
  • To be faithful in prayer and devotional life.
  • To spend a minimum of one hour per week in lesson preparations.
  • To follow up with absent students by post card, phone call or visit.
  • To attend any and all teacher's meetings.
  • To take advantage of at least two teacher growth/training opportunities per year.
  • To take every opportunity to include parents in classroom participation where appropriate.

Expectation of Parents - Parents are expected to be on the church grounds while their children are in Sunday School. SLBC offers a number of adult classes as well as the opportunity to help out in children's classrooms.

We strongly encourage parents to make the Christian Education Hour a family event each Sunday. In the event parents cannot be on the premises, the coordinator needs to have an emergency contact person and phone numbers.

Lessons learned in the Sunday School are the most effective when shared with and reinforced by parents. Therefore, as part of our Sunday School program we encourage and support the participation of parent-helpers on a regular basis in each classroom.  All parents are encouraged to speak with their child's teacher to set up a time for this important interaction.

Expectation of Students - Our hope and prayer is that the Sunday morning educational hour will be seen for what it truly is, a time to learn more about God and His great love for us.  We also pray that it would be a high priority for all of God's people at SLBC. To this end, we request that students be prompt and regular in their attendance, come to class prepared with Bible memory work completed and eager to participate in the day's lesson.

Background Checks - For the safety and protection of our children, all nursery, children, and youth workers are required to submit to a background check and to have on file, a signed copy of the SLBC Child Protection Policy Receipt Acknowledgement Form indicating that they have read and agree to adhere to the Sugar Land Bible Church Child Protection Policy. We do not take lightly the care of our children and hope that you understand and appreciate the precautions we take to protect them.
